Swords and Love Valley Hiking

Pick-up from your hotel after the breakfast and today’s hiking tour starts from the top of the Sword’s Valley (Kılıçlar Vadisi) – we will begin walking among the ancient cave settlements with many open cave houses and churches to explore. We continue along the top of the plateau with impressive views on both sides. Local ranchers use the ancient caves for horses, cows and goats and leave them to graze in the valley.

We continue down to the main road and cross over to the famous Love Valley where the trail winds through tall, phallic-shaped rock formations. We continue up the trail to reach the Goreme Sunset Point – with vantage points of Rose Valley behind us and Uchisar village on the horizon.

We continue down through the old city streets of Goreme passing ancient cave ruins mixed among luxury hotels until we reach the village center. Lunch will be at a local restaurant or box lunch depending on the weather. From Goreme center we continue on towards Pigeon Valley – with a slight detour to visit the Kadir Durmus cave church and walk around and above this once-hidden cave church. The breathtaking views towards Uchisar are spectacular from this location. We again pick up the Pigeon Valley trail that works its way towards the village of Uchisar. The trail is mostly flat until we reach base of the village where we will walk up to the winding cobblestone streets to ultimately reach the Uchisar Castle at the very top of the hill. From the top of Uchisar Castle we can see across the heart of Cappadocia.  After,  we can explore the west-side of the Uchisar castle which meanders down to the main road – this side of the castle has many cave houses and interesting rock formations. Some of the fairy chimneys are still lived in or used for souvenir shops.  Our driver will pick us up at the bottom of this hill and then deliver you to your hotel to complete your hiking tour of Cappadocia. Today’s hike will be is 7-10 km in total.

Please note: the hiking routes are an example of a regular hiking/walking tour – changes may be made due to weather, fitness levels or other situations. Any changes will be discussed with you to ensure you have a hike that works for your interests, weather conditions and walking ability. The trails are mostly well-worn and easy to walk on, however, there are several steep trails going up and down the valleys, therefore good walking or hiking shoes are recommended as we will be walking on tufa (pressed volcanic ash) most of the time. Sunscreen, hats and sunglasses are necessities as there are few places with shade on these trails and the sun is very intense. All of these items can be purchased here in souvenir shops, if necessary.
