DAY 1: CAPPADOCIA - KAHTA [No Meal] Departing from your Cappadocia-area hotel at 08:00, we’re beginnig our journey to the East with our professionally-licensed tour guide and private driver. We will follow the ancient Silk Road and stop at the Seljuk Karatayhan Caravanserai- Providing important safety, lodging, meals and care along the heavily traded Silk Road - the massive, ornately-carved doors and the city within the walls show the ingenuity and importance these caravanserais held for the traders. Our way takes us through the majestic Taurus Mountains, offering a unique mountain village scenery on the way. After lunch we will stop in the city of Kahramanmaras – known for special ice cream made from crushed orchids. We arrive to Kahta in the afternoon and check into the hotel. Overnight stay in Kahta.
DAY 2: MT. NEMRUT – HARRAN – GOBEKLITEPE [B] Before sunrise we will drive by car up to Mount Nemrut for the spectacular sunrise over the plains below. The light walk from the van parking area to the viewing site is approximately 20 minutes. With the impressive carved head statues of kings and gods – sunrise is the best time to experience this ancient wonder, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Afterwards we’ll return to our hotel for breakfast, then check-out and depart for Arsemia-the ancient capital of the Commagene Kingdom, 2nd Century BC. The archeological remains include the famous bird-topped column called “blackbird” or “Karakuş” in Turkish. On our way to Sanliurfa, we will pass the Ataturk Dam – the biggest dam in the Middle East. We will check into our hotel and enjoy a lunch break in the city. After lunch, the first visit is to Abraham’s Cave and the Pools of the Holy Carp – a sacred pilgrimage site on the Abraham’s Path and thought to be the birthplace of the Prophet Abraham. After visiting the site, we will continue to the covered bazaar and Gumrukhan, a lively ancient square full of locals and tea houses. We next visit the famous mud-brick “beehive-shaped houses” in the city of Harran – also mentioned in the Book of Genesis where Abraham spent the last years of his life. Our last stop of the day is at the incredible Gobeklitepe. Discovered just 20 years ago, this ancient site is more than 11,000 years old and thought to be primarily for ritual burials, and in some lesser capacity big feasts and social gatherings. Gobeklitepe is an active archeological excavation site today. Overnight stay in Sanliurfa.
DAY 3 – SANLIURFA - CAPPADOCIA [B] After breakfast at your hotel, we depart for our drive back to Cappadocia*. On the way we will stop at the Birecik Bird Sanctuary to see the rare Bald Ibis birds. After lunch we drive through the Taurus Mountains with a short break before arriving at your hotel in Cappadocia. Goodbye!
